Musk Thistle Your Time is Up
Join us for a Wednesday in Mount Rose Wilderness! We will meet at the Hunter Creek trailhead at 8 am on Wednesday, May 14th, and hike to a location along Hunter Creek Trail as a group to remove the invasive musk thistle.
Musk thistle is classified as a noxious weed that spreads prolifically and negatively impacts native ecosystems. This weed thrives in disturbed areas like fire scars and replaces native plants. As wildfire seasons rage hotter and longer, restoration is vital to ensure native species have a fighting chance at survival. Musk thistle competes with desirable native plants, and because of its spiny nature, wildlife rarely graze upon it. When left unmanaged, it can take over and transform the landscape. Removing this invading species directly supports the health of our native ecosystems. Weed pulls are a fun way to spend time outdoors and help support the health of our native ecosystems.
Check out these photos from a weed removal project last year.

Mission Statement
Friends of Nevada Wilderness is dedicated to preserving all qualified Nevada public lands as wilderness, protecting all present and potential wilderness from ongoing threats, educating the public about the values of and need for wilderness, and improving the management and restoration of public wild lands.
Description
Are you interested in volunteering outside, exploring remote wild lands, taking care of your local public lands, making friends? Join Friends of Nevada Wilderness on a volunteer stewardship trip! Together we can keep our public lands and wilderness areas safe and clean. We would love to see you at our next stewardship project.
Friends of Nevada Wilderness organizes volunteer restoration trips to help wild landscapes recover from noxious weeds, illegal vehicle use, and other impacts (because official designations do not guarantee on-the-ground protection). Our volunteers also "adopt" areas to monitor their condition and advocate for their protection. Volunteers get to work with others to heal our wild places. These trips are fun, rewarding, and can be a great way to meet new Friends. All volunteers are welcome! We have volunteer opportunities for every skill level, ranging from getting out on the ground and pulling fence, picking up trash, naturalizing old roads, planting seedlings, monitoring wilderness, and yanking invasive plants to helping with outreach events and office tasks.
By helping citizens actively restore wild lands, we help build in them a greater sense of responsibility and stewardship.
