Help people find the resources they need after a disaster! Join our Shelter Resident Transition Team
ORGANIZATION: American Red Cross - Illinois Region

After major disasters that impact multiple families at once, the American Red Cross opens shelters to provide a safe place to sleep and good meals to eat. Our shelter team offers on site support and assistance until every disaster victim is able to leave the shelter. YOU could be a key member of our team, helping those people get ready to leave our shelters and get back on track.
A disaster tosses a family's world upside-down. Many people lose their homes, and others sustain enough damage in their homes that they can't return right away. Our Red Cross shelters offer a safe place to meet their immediate needs and let them figure out what to do next. Our Recovery Client Care Volunteers work directly with these clients: listening compassionately, helping find resources to restore their housing, food, clothing, medical and mental health needs, and empowering them to take small steps each day to get "back to normal" or to find a brand new "normal." Sometimes, shelter residents just really don't know where to begin or where they will go next. Our Shelter Resident Transition (SRT) team helps them find a way forward. This requires empathy, discretion, compassion and patience, and a willingness to research and solve problems. We provide all the training you'll need to be effective in helping people to make a plan and move out of the disaster shelter.
Interested? Please respond to this opportunity or text Connie at 309-207-5266.
Note: If you enjoy helping people over the phone, and have the skills listed above, we can use you as a Recovery Client Care volunteer and I'd love to talk to you about it! It's much of the same work as a Shelter Resident Transition team member, but with more flexibility to work from home and on your own schedule.
Shelter Resident Transition team members enjoy being right in the middle of the action and helping people face to face. As an SRT team member, you will BE ASSIGNED TO WORK IN THE SHELTER with other Red Cross team members. You can deploy to disaster shelters near your hometown, throughout the Illinois Region, or even nationally. It's a bigger commitment than recovery casework over the phone, but it's rewarding work and you'll feel like an essential part of something much bigger. We need SRT team members all throughout the state of Illinois, in Scott, Muscatine, Van Buren and Lee Counties in Iowa, and in Lewis, Clark, Marion and Ralls Counties in Missouri.
