Bridging Beyond is a rapidly evolving organisation powered by volunteers who bring their diverse skills, perspectives, and passions to address societal divisions. We are committed to fostering empathy, understanding, and inclusive collaboration in communities.

A Sociologist volunteer will leverage sociological insights and methods to help shape our programs, refine communication strategies, and evaluate the real-world impact of our initiatives.

In this role you may be called upon to do the following-

  • Inform Project Development - Use research findings to guide program and workshop designs, ensuring that interventions are grounded in evidence-based understanding of social structures and interpersonal relations.
  • Evaluate and Improve Outreach - Analyse feedback and participation data to identify trends, measure impact, and propose improvements for greater community engagement and empathy-building outcomes.
  • Public Speaking & Advocacy - Represent Bridging Beyond’s mission and share sociological insights at events, webinars, or conferences, inspiring empathy and unity through research-backed perspectives.
  • Contribute to Organisational Growth - Participate in strategic planning, communication strategy, and volunteer engagement efforts, offering a sociological lens to shape organisational policies and practices.
  • Design and Conduct Sociological Research - Plan and carry out studies-such as surveys, interviews, or community-based assessments-to better understand social dynamics, group processes, and cultural contexts relevant to Bridging Beyond’s mission.

Your volunteer experience will be flexible. We’ll work together to define specific responsibilities based on your expertise and our organisational priorities.

Personal Skills and Attributes-

  • Sociological Expertise & Research Skills - Academic or professional background in sociology or related social sciences, including familiarity with qualitative and/or quantitative research methods.
  • Analytical & Data-Informed - Comfortable interpreting research data, identifying meaningful patterns, and applying insights to practical program enhancements.
  • Cultural & Social Awareness - Skilled at recognising how power structures, cultural contexts, and social norms influence group dynamics and individual participation.
  • Collaborative & Flexible - Ready to adapt your focus and work with volunteers from various backgrounds as Bridging Beyond evolves.
  • Empathetic Communicator - Able to translate sociological concepts and research findings for a broad audience, maintaining respect for diverse perspectives and lived experiences.

How can you help support this work?

  • Flexible Engagement - We’ll discuss your availability and determine a schedule that works for you. Anticipate variable hours depending on project stages and timelines.

  • Leadership & Innovation - Use your expertise to guide and potentially lead new initiatives, demonstrating how behavioural insights can enhance our mission.

  • Collaboration & Communication - Participate in check-ins or project-specific meetings, providing feedback, data, and recommendations in a clear, actionable manner.

  • Growth & Adaptation - As Bridging Beyond evolves, your role may expand or shift. We value adaptability and welcome new ideas that align with our goals.

About Bridging Beyond

Location:

Newington Green Alliance, 128 City Road, London, Greater London EC1V2NX, GB

Mission Statement

We cultivate empathy and understanding across differences.

Description

Our vision
Our vision is to help people live more connected, satisfying, caring lives in community.

Our strategy
To achieve our bold goals, we approach 'bridging’ with a scientific point of view. Our methods are rooted in research showing that empathy is a key driver of social cohesion and trust. By fostering active listening, curiosity, and compassionate dialogue, we help individuals and groups challenge biases, reduce conflict, and build bridges across divides.

Based on the findings of our research team, we have developed a series of workshops with specific methodologies towards building empathy. We are offering these workshops together with strategic partners in different communities based in the London boroughs of Hackney and Islington.

Bridging Beyond is the working name of Newington Green Alliance
