Position Overview: Lived experience as a caregiver brings valuable insight and compassion to others navigating similar paths. Volunteers with the Family Caregiver Support Program (FCSP) play a meaningful role in supporting fellow caregivers caring for older adults or grandchildren through connection, shared understanding, and problem-solving.
Volunteers may offer a listening ear, assist with special events, help lead support groups, or work with caregivers to brainstorm and implement solutions tailored to their unique needs. The time commitment is flexible and will be tailored to each volunteer’s interests, availability, and preferred level of involvement. Volunteers also have the option to contribute either in person or remotely, depending on what works best for them.
Core Volunteer Roles
1. Peer Support & Caregiver Engagement
- Provide in-person or telephonic support to caregivers.
- Offer a listening ear and emotional support to fellow caregivers.
- Collaborate with caregivers to brainstorm strategies and practical solutions tailored to their unique caregiving situations.
2. Caregiver Group Facilitation
- Lead or co-facilitate caregiver support groups, offering structure, encouragement, and shared wisdom.
- Participate in training to become a certified Dementia Friend or a support group facilitator.
3. Events & Community Outreach
- Assist the FCSP team in planning and executing special events for caregivers and their families.
- Represent the FCSP program at community events or information sessions.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Previous experience as a family caregiver required
- Bilingual/bicultural (Spanish/Khmer) a plus
- Experience with technology a plus
- Good understanding of family dynamics
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Willingness to travel throughout the AgeSpan service area
- Willingness to take certifications and trainings related to caregiving
- Compassionate, flexible attitude, and a good sense of humor

Description
AgeSpan, formerly Elder Services of the Merrimack Valley, Inc. is a private, non-profit corporation established in 1974 by a group of citizens throughout the Merrimack Valley who were committed to developing programs and services for elders. The Agency is governed by a policymaking Board that oversees the management of the Agency. Members are a blend of representatives from Councils on Aging and At Large members from communities in our area with 51% of members over the age of 60.
AgeSpan has become a leader in creating services, programs and opportunities for older adults. As an Aging Services Access Point (ASAP), the Agency receives state funding to provide services designed to maintain an elder's independence at home and in the community. AgeSpan is also the designated Area Agency on Aging (AAA), receiving federal funding to fund community services and provide information and referral to elders, families and the community. The Agency also receives funding from a variety of grants, foundations and fund raising efforts and matching funds from local communities.
