Help Feed Our Keiki This Summer - Become a Meal Program Coordinator!
Project Hawai’i, Inc. is looking for a passionate and organized volunteer to coordinate our Summer Meal Program for homeless keiki across the Big Island. This isn’t a food drive-it’s a vital initiative to ensure our keiki have consistent, nutritious meals every day of our summer educational program.

Our summer programs serve homeless children ages 3-11 and teen mentors in various locations. We provide daily meals that support healthy development, improve focus, and help children fully engage in educational and enrichment activities.

What You'll Do as a Coordinator:

As the Summer Meal Program Coordinator, you’ll lead the effort to secure planned, nutritious meals for the keiki attending our summer camp. You will NOT be collecting random food donations. Instead, you’ll help coordinate a set weekly menu with community partners to collect the list of menu items needed for each individual snack or meal per day.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Secure Meal Sponsors - Reach out to local restaurants, cafes, and food trucks to sponsor a daily meal ( lunch or dinner ). For example, ask if a restaurant could sponsor "Taco Tuesdays" or provide 40 bentos on a Thursday, or host our 10 teens for a dinner at their place of business. We have two options available for restaurants/ 1. host our group of 10 teens for dinner or sponsor the entire camp wtih servings for 40.

  • Engage Community Groups - Work with clubs, school groups, churches, or businesses to adopt a meal day (e.g., Rotary Clubs, Girl Scouts, Churches. .sponsors lunches or host a meal ingredients drive within their group in June).

  • Maintain a Weekly Menu Calendar - Help ensure variety and nutritional balance by coordinating what meals are served on which days. We have an online sign up you can either hand fill in or have the sponsor fill in. However, you will need to have a spreadsheet with contact information and commitment of sponsorship.

  • Follow Up & Confirm - Stay in contact with all meal sponsors and groups to confirm delivery or drop-off at the assigned time and location. Depending on how you have secured the meal, for example a group is delivering the meal hot and ready to serve to our camp for lunch, or if the group is delivering the ingredient for us to prepare.

  • Assist with Pickup Logistics (if needed) - Some sponsors may need assistance getting the food to camp; you’ll help organize drivers or pick-up support with our team or other volunteers. Our goal is to have each group be able to deliver either ahead of time in June to our Kea'au Location or if making the meal deliver to the camp location on that day. Obviously resturants sponsoring a meal at their place of business, we will travel to them.

This Role Supports Big Island Locations:
  • Hilo/Kea'au area

  • Kona side (we still need a few restaurants to sponsor our 10 teens a lunch or dinner)

Our summer camp sites are located in Hilo or Kea'au. Your work will directly impact the homeless children we serve by ensuring they are well-fed and ready to learn and grow.

Time Commitment:
  • 5-10 hours (flexible schedule)

  • Must be available from May through end of June for coordination

  • Most work is done remotely by phone/email, with some in-person outreach or pickups if needed

What You’ll Gain:
  • Experience in community outreach and nonprofit coordination

  • Direct impact on improving food security for children

  • A letter of recommendation and community service hours

  • Lots of aloha from our keiki and team!

Interested in Helping Feed Our Keiki This Summer?

Please include where on the island you reside and how many hours per week you are available to make these phone calls and emails.
Help us make this summer a time of joy, growth, and nourishment for our most vulnerable keiki.
