ORGANIZATION: Learning Home Volunteers

  • 2 people are interested

Every three weeks, we bring fun and learning to local low-income families. We bring a new learning box to their home - filled with books and activities to explore together.

We need helpers to deliver these boxes. You'll be paired with a second person who can help navigate, will eliminate the need for finding parking, who will carry the boxes, and who will make the delivery more enjoyable. You can see the excitement and smiles on the families' faces when their new boxes arrive.

Pick up boxes in San Carlos (near Belmont border) and deliver to East Palo Alto. Bonus points for Spanish speakers.

What's needed

  • A vehicle you're willing to use -- the bigger, the better! Bonus points for a van/SVU
  • Recurring commitment to help every 3 weeks (or advance notice if you need to skip a delivery cycle) -- if needed, can reimburse for mileage
  • Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday options starting betweeen 11AM - 3PM
  • 2-3 hour commitment per delivery

You can propose timing within these parameters that works well for you.

Mission Statement

Learning Home Volunteers' mission is to improve educational outcomes for low-income children by transforming their home into a center of learning and their parents into agents of change for their child's educational growth.

Description

20% of the nation's children live in poverty. This effects their educational outcomes. 70% of them enter school unprepared. 50% will read at below grade level throughout their schooling. 30% will eventually drop out of high school. In our community the situation is even worse: 80% enter school unprepared and 73% are reading below grade level at 3rd grade. After 3rd grade, all learning is book based making it difficult to keep up if you can't read well.

Our program works with parents to help them prepare their child for kindergarten. Through training they learn how to support their child's learning through the use of learning materials design, built, and packaged by our experts. We are changing outcomes for under-served communities in San Mateo County. Joins us. Change the future - one child at a time!
