ORGANIZATION: Institute on Aging

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

Volunteer from the comfort of your home or in person at the Friendship Line’s Carmichael Volunteer Hub.

Make a meaningful difference in the lives of older adults and adults living with disabilities across California.

The Friendship Line is a vital program of the Institute on Aging. We are dedicated to reducing loneliness and social isolation among older adults, adults with disabilities, and their caregivers. By building a culture of connection, we offer emotional support, foster social engagement, and provide a lifeline of hope to those who need it most.

As a Friendship Line Volunteer, you’ll offer compassionate phone support to:

  • Older adults (60+) living
  • Adults (18+) with physical or mental disabilities
  • Caregivers of these individuals

In addition to receiving incoming calls, the Friendship Line also offers scheduled outgoing calls to California residents who prefer to be contacted at specific times. These confidential calls can provide meaningful support to older adults and individuals with disabilities who may be experiencing loneliness, depression, isolation, anxiety, or thoughts of death or suicide.

If you reside in California, please complete an application at:

About Institute on Aging

Location:

3575 Geary Blvd., San Francisco, CA 94118, US

Mission Statement

Institute on Aging works to enhance the quality of life for adults as they age by enabling them to maintain their health, well-being, independence and participation in the community. We serve a diverse population of older adults and disabled adults by providing innovative, community-based programs that enable our clients to live at home for as long as possible. We serve as an essential partner in the continuum of care by providing health services, social and emotional support, and education and advocacy.

Description

Institute on Aging (IOA) believes the future should be something to look forward to, at every age. We bring together pioneering experts, seasoned champions and hands-on caregivers to make growing older better for Bay Area seniors and their families.

As the leading advocate for older adults and those who care for them, we offer a broad spectrum of services and support to help seniors maintain their independence as long as it is safe to do so. In addition to providing home care and case management services, we operate San Francisco’s Elder Abuse Prevention Program; The Friendship Line, a free 24-hour suicide prevention "warm" line for seniors; adult day care centers for adults experiencing Alzheimer’s and dementia; the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), which provides medical care, physical therapy and enrichment activities for older adults; and CONNECT, a free community referral service for all things elder.
