One day project clearing trail up to Rattle Ridge with views of Lake Pend Oreille
This one-day project takes place on the Mud Creek Trail near Beetop Roundtop Trail. We’ll start at Lightening Creek Road and hike 5.6 miles, gaining 2,400 feet of elevation to reach Rattle Ridge. Along the way, we’ll enjoy stunning views of Lake Pend Oreille, the mountains and valleys of northern Idaho, northwest Montana, and even British Columbia. We’ll be focused on clearing the trail and performing maintenance tasks to keep this scenic route in top shape for future hikers. It’s a great chance to enjoy the outdoors while giving back to the trail system.
Project information is subject to change. Crew leaders will communicate via email. Failure to respond to your crew leader may result in being dropped from the project. See our FAQs, reach out to your crew leader, or contact ITA staff at trails@idahotrailsassociation.org if you have questions.

Our Mission: To keep Idaho’s hiking trails open for all Idaho’s extensive trail system is vital for those who seek adventure and solitude in Idaho’s outdoors. Idaho Trails Association brings together volunteers, organizations, and government partners to stand strong and work hard for Idaho’s trails.
Description
Idaho Trails Association does trail maintenance in all of Idaho with the goal of keeping Idaho's hiking trails open for all.
- Caretaking of Trails: Since ITA began, we’ve completed over 450 trail stewardship projects with the help of hundreds of volunteers.
- Education and Awareness: ITA educates the public about the stewardship of our recreation areas and following Leave No Trace principles.
- Advocacy and Protection: As the voice for Idaho’s hiking community, ITA works to conserve trails and keep public lands public.
- Traditional Skills: Crew leaders teach volunteers the safe use of hand tools on every project to keep trails open in the front and backcountry.
In 2024, we had 78 volunteer trail projects, 759 volunteers, 332 miles of trail cleared, 11964 volunteer hours, 4152 logs removed, and 31340 miles of tread fixed in 9 national forests and 5 wilderness areas.
