Volunteers are needed to help with set-up and take-down of moth light equipment, check-in attendees, assist with monitoring the collecting sheets, lights, and stability of frames. Volunteers may help attendees with playing Moth Bingo, pointing out interesting insects, and provide basic assistance with using iNaturalist.
Summon the Light: Commune with the Moths.Unofficially described as part citizen science, part magic, and all parts pure moth joy, we’re ecstatic to return for another night of mothy mayhem! Whether you are a curious newcomer or seasoned moth’er, young or old, join us for an evening around the glowing lights where moths lurk and everyone’s weirdness is welcome!
This year’s Moth Crawl has expanded thanks to a grant from the Hillsborough Garden Club. Moth your way across three locations in one night at multiple Mothing Stations per venue. We will have over 10 different light collecting sheets using a combination of mercury vapor, LepiLED, and Entoqup UV lights.
Moth Station hosts and volunteers will help you identify moths on collecting sheet(s), answer questions, and provide information about moths and the various other insects you will see.
Mothing is a weather dependent activity. Attendees will be provided updates by email about delayed start times or rescheduling in the event of rain. The scheduled rain date is Sunday, June 8 at the same times and locations.

Description
Backyard Butterflies engaged and conducts multiple activities and events annually during the Lepidoptera season.
Education: We provide Lepidoptera education via classes, workshops, butterfly counts, and moth nights.
Community Outreach: We attend public festivals and community events. We offer multiple opportunities for citizen science through our NABA butterfly counts and moth nights.
Backyard Habitats: The symbiotic relationship between Lepidoptera species and host plants is crucial to the Lepidoptera life cycle. This aspect of our mission includes Plant Production, Plant Sale Fundraisers, and maintenance of our Backyard Habitat.
Our annual events include Annual Moth Night during National Moth Week, Annual Open House & Plant Swap in June, and the Hillsborough Moth Crawl. We also conduct the North Carolina Under-reported County Mothing Project (NCUCMP) through the NC Moth Project, a citizen science project targeting under-reported counties within the state.
Our programs include the Caterpillar Support Program in which we offer free support and assistance to help people who have caterpillars in need of host plants to complete their life cycle. Our Plant Donation Program awards Plant Grants to qualifying groups, organizations, schools, churches, libraries, and HOAs.
