i.d.e.a. Museum is a children's art museum located in the heart of downtown Mesa. During the fall and spring semesters, we offer a Guided Tour program for elementary school children (primarily Kindergarten through 3rd grades).

We are looking for volunteer Tour Docents to help us deliver these fun, educational programs to school groups throughout the fall semester. Volunteer docents will work alongside museum staff and interns and training will be provided.

This is our exhibition for Fall 2019:

  • Weather or Not: Art With Atmosphere - Sept. 27 through Jan. 19. The artwork in this exhibition will be related to weather phenomena and will include a variety of different media. The interactive and art-making activities will highlight Arizona weather as well as weather around the world, the difference between weather and climate, and learning how animals are adapted to the climate they live in. Children will also learn about the water cycle and how that relates to the 3 states of matter.
Each exhibition has its own tour program, and training is provided for each exhibition. Docents will be invited to a walkthrough of the new exhibition with the museum curator and curator of education to learn about the artwork and activities contained in the exhibition, and will then attend training specific to the tour program. New volunteer docents then shadow experienced tour guides as they get ready to lead their own tour groups.

The Guided Tours are 90 minutes in length and are aligned to the state standards. Part of the tour (60 minutes) is spent in the exhibition gallery at specific activity stations, and the other part (30 minutes) consists of an art activity in our art studio classroom.

Scheduling for this volunteer position is flexible and is based on a combination of volunteer availability and booked tours. Guided Tours are scheduled on weekday mornings (Tuesday-Friday).

Experience in some of the following areas is helpful:

  • Teaching
  • Public speaking
  • Storytelling
  • Working with children
  • Group management
