Over 15,000 troops who served in conflicts ranging from the War of 1812 to the Vietnam War are buried at Chalmette National Cemetery. To honor our service members for Memorial Day, volunteers will place American flags at each of the 15,300 graves in Chalmette National Cemetery. The volunteer will assist with flag placement and retirement. The volunteer agrees to work the morning of May 23rd, 9:00 am - 11:00 am, and also May 27th, beginning at 9:00 am, to retire and pack flags for storage, if able. Date for flag retirement may be changed due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Please contact the park for confirmation. The work will involve repetitive movement (bending, lifting) outdoors and take place in a hot and humid environment.
