Lake Protector Volunteer: Stop the Golden Mussel Invasion

Main Goals for Position:

Golden mussels are an invasive, non-native species that poses a significant threat to California’s ecosystems, water quality, and infrastructure. Volunteers with the Lake Protector inspection program will play an important role in the prevention of golden mussel invasion.

Duties:

  • Educate Whiskeytown visitors on the severity of the golden mussel invasion and the importance of prevention.
  • Educate visitors on the proper Clean, Drain, Dry boat procedures.
  • Assist Whiskeytown staff in verifying boats have not been exposed to golden mussels.
  • Perform necessary boat inspections before and after vessel is in Whiskeytown lake.
  • Volunteer will always work with a Whiskeytown staff member, never stationed alone.

Time Commitment:

  • Lake Protector Program will run early May through fall season.
  • 6am-10am shifts primarily (but not exclusively) on weekends.
  • 10am-2pm shifts primary (but not exclusively) on weekends.

Physical Demands:

Moderate physical effort is required for this position. Volunteer may spend a majority of their time standing and walking.

Work Environment

Various outdoor settings in Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. Volunteers should be prepared to carry out position responsibilities in a range of weather, most specifically, high heat.
