We are looking for consistent volunteers to be present and spend time with our members at our community center, Shechem at Hope Street. We are looking for volunteers during all of our open hours:
10am-6pm Monday-Thursday
10am-5pm Friday
We are looking for people who want to connect with community. We are open for men, women and children. During the day, we largely have young men coming to play basketball. Afterschool, the building fills with kids. In the summer, we have young adults and kids in the building. Take a look at our website to see some of the programming opportunties we have: https://www.hopestreetministry.org/shechem-at-hopestreet
You could play a game or make a craft with a member. You could shoot hoops. You could work remotely for your own job on the roof, or a classroom, and create a safer space. You could help with check in. You could come and clean. You could sit and pray. You could look over the gym space. Sit and chat with members. Listen. See how people would like to spend their time and join in. See if you can help someone towards their goals.
What we really need is just more positive people present. People who understand our values of building community, cultivating hope and offering protection.
We look for consistent volunteers. That could look like once a week for a full day, biweekly for an hour, or anything else that works for you. Relationships and trust take time and consistency to build, and we see that those connections are what often lead to growth.

Mission Statement
Hope Street is the Greenhouse for People on 26th and Capitol. We give broken men, women and children a safe place to grow. We cultivate hope and build community as we live out the ministry of Jesus on the northside of Milwaukee. Hope Street provides housing and healing to about 50 men, women, and children whose lives have been profoundly affected by the toxic environment they grew up in, their own choices, or drug and alcohol abuse. Empowered by the active Grace of Christ, the staff, volunteers and members cultivate a nurturing community in which we can live, learn and develop new habits that help people flourish.
Description
Since 1999, we have provided housing and healing in the Greenhouse for People on 26th and Capitol. We started as a resource for men with backgrounds of drug and alcohol abuse and those coming from incarceration. We soon began welcoming men and women, and eventually in 2012, we began welcoming men and women coming from any form of brokenness. In 2013, when a woman found herself facing the choice of moving out of Hope Street prematurely to care for her otherwise displaced child, we let a child stay at Hope Street temporarily, which eventually turned into permanently. At that time we became the only transitional living facility in Milwaukee that allowed men, women and children, and the only facility that allowed people to stay beyond 24 months.
Located in the Garden Homes Neighborhood in the 53206 zip code, Hope Street has a 24 unit apartment building. Here, we are able to house about 50 men, women and children at any given time. Now we are building Shechem at Hope Street, a community center complete with a gym, classrooms, cafe, resource center and event spaces that will open this August. Shechem at Hope Street will provide our members who move out of Hope Street a place to remain connected. It will also give us room to welcome our neighborhood into the same sort of transformation that happens at Hope Street. Our Transplant Programming will take place in both our current building and at Shechem at Hope Street.
