SCC is seeking passionate volunteers to support our ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) and Digital Literacy programs. These programs help community members acquire essential skills in language and technology, empowering them to navigate daily life, access opportunities, and build a stronger future.
How You Can Help
We’re looking for volunteers for the following roles, based on your skills, availability, and interests:
Volunteer as an ESOL or Digital Literacy Instructor
Instructors dedicate 3-5 hours of classroom time per week, teaching in our ESOL or Digital Literacy programs. Our student-led curriculum recognizes that every learner brings valuable knowledge to the classroom, fostering an environment where both students and instructors learn and grow together. This approach promotes collaboration, adaptability, and creativity in the learning process.
In our classes, we emphasize building a community of mutual learning, nurturing strong connections between teachers, students, and classmates. These relationships help create trust, enhance collaboration, and strengthen the community-ultimately leading to more effective learning.
Volunteer instructors gain meaningful classroom relationships, hands-on teaching experience, and workforce development opportunities. Support is provided through our Digital Equity Supervisor, classroom observations, and a network of fellow volunteers.
Volunteer as a Digital Literacy or ESOL Tutor
Tutors commit 1-2 hours per week to work one-on-one with students. This role provides extra practice, helps address specific challenges, and supports individual learning goals. Each tutoring partnership is personalized to the student’s progress and objectives.
Tutors and students can meet online, in public meeting spaces, or-depending on availability-at SCC’s offices. This flexible opportunity allows tutors to make a direct impact while working within their own schedule and interests.
Not Sure If You Have the Skills? No Problem!
At SCC, we believe that everyone has something valuable to contribute. Our student-centered approach shows us that you don’t need to be an expert to make a meaningful impact. If you have an interest in supporting adult immigrants and a passion for helping others, we’d love to have you! We encourage you to fill out an interest form, and don’t hesitate to reach out to Cai Cronin if you have any questions or want to learn more.

Mission Statement
The Somerville Community Corporation (SCC) is a membership organization that provides leadership for sustaining the City of Somerville as a vibrant, diverse and tolerant community. We offer services and lead community organizing that supports low- and moderate-income Somerville residents in their efforts to achieve economic sustainability and increase civic participation.
Description
True economic opportunity and social justice require long- term resolve and investment to turn communities of exclusion and disadvantage into communities of opportunity and equity. SCC’s work is the foundation of that investment. We help our neighbors find local jobs with living wages, and secure a sustainable place to live, either as residents of our affordable housing or by realizing their dream of owning a home. SCC’s work is part of a comprehensive vision for community investment using a range of equity levers, such as sustainable housing, wages and income, workforce development and employment, and education and training pathways. We take an abolitionist stance on poverty and believe a stable home and living wage job are the foundation upon which all else is built. Through housing, community development, and economic opportunity, we aim to achieve a more equitable and just city.
