Overview:
The Public Relations Intern will support the visibility and reputation of AAWTA through strategic communications, media outreach, and relationship-building. This role is ideal for a dynamic communicator who is passionate about public relations, storytelling, and amplifying the voices of underrepresented communities.
As part of AAWTA’s communications team, the PR Intern will help shape the organization’s public narrative while gaining valuable experience and exposure in PR strategy, press release development, media relations, and nonprofit branding.
Responsibilities include:
Draft and distribute press releases, media alerts, and official statements
Assist in building and maintaining media contact lists and press databases
Contribute to the development of AAWTA’s media kit and public-facing content
Support branding and visibility campaigns for AAWTA’s programs, events, and partners
Help track media coverage and prepare press reports or summaries
Coordinate interview opportunities for leadership, members, and key partners
Support public event planning and promotion, including fundraisers, webinars, and panels
Collaborate with social media and design teams to maintain brand consistency across all platforms
Preferred Skills:
Excellent written and verbal communication
Familiarity with press release formats and AP style
Interest in public relations, media, branding, advocacy, or nonprofit communications
Ability to research, pitch, and think creatively under deadlines
Organized, detail-oriented, and able to work independently
Familiarity with Canva, Google Workspace, Mailchimp, or media tools (e.g., Muck Rack or Cision) is a plus
