Overview:
The Journalism Intern will play an essential role in supporting AAWTA’s mission by producing research-based articles, news features, and digital content that highlights trends, challenges, and success stories within the trucking industry-especially those impacting African American women. This position is ideal for a detail-oriented and curious writer with a passion for storytelling, data, and community-focused journalism.
Responsibilities include:
Research and write articles on industry-related topics such as workforce trends, policy changes, health disparities, and social justice in transportation
Collect, interpret, and integrate relevant data and statistics into compelling, easy-to-read narratives
Assist in drafting blog posts that align with AAWTA’s voice and mission, covering member spotlights, industry updates, and community impact stories
Support the development of press releases to announce partnerships, initiatives, events, and organizational milestones
Conduct interviews with AAWTA members, partners, and experts to develop authentic, story-driven features
Monitor media and news trends to identify timely topics and contribute ideas to AAWTA’s content calendar
Collaborate across departments to ensure alignment in tone, accuracy, and branding
Preferred Skills:
Strong writing, editing, and research skills
Familiarity with blog writing, AP-style press releases, and nonprofit storytelling
Ability to analyze and present statistics in an engaging, accessible way
Proficiency with Google Docs and Sheets; familiarity with basic formatting tools or CMS is a plus
Journalism, communications, public policy, or public health background preferred
Passion for equity, workforce advocacy, transportation, or women’s empowerment
