Description
I recently started up a nonprofit in Las Vegas that is designed specifically for our female youth.
On May 7th, I lost my best friend who was also my cousin but we were raised as close as sisters. She tragically passed away due to an overdose. Sadly, she was pregnant at the time. Our upbringing was rough and we were raised around drugs, alcohol, and physical abuse. My cousin, Valeigha, grew up in the streets as a result of unhealthy coping mechanisms. She used drugs and alcohol to deal with her traumas. She was physically abused and sexually assaulted on many occasions.
The nonprofit organization that I have started is called Leigha’s Girls. It will be a safe haven for young girls fighting similar battles as Valeigha did and experiencing similar traumas as we did as well. It will be an afterschool program with mentorship, activities and homework assistance. On weekends, we will host local traveling activities, have professionals come in to teach basic life skills and self defense, have group and individual therapy sessions, host community service events and much more.
The goal is to save as many girls as I can and to teach them to love and respect themselves.
