Recruiting Organization: Haiti Projects

Role Overview:

As a Board Member, you will serve as a vital steward and advocate for Haiti Projects, helping guide the organization toward its mission of empowering women in rural Haiti. You will collaborate with other board members, the Executive Director, and senior staff to set the organization's strategic direction, ensure financial stability, and help amplify the impact of Haiti Projects' work.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership: Provide oversight and strategic direction to ensure Haiti Projects is fulfilling its mission and goals. Participate in the development and review of long-term plans, goals, and annual objectives.
  • Fundraising & Advocacy: Leverage your network and resources to secure funding, increase donor engagement, and expand the organization's visibility. Make an annual contribution to Haiti Projects based on your means. Act as an ambassador for Haiti Projects and advocate for its programs and mission.
  • Financial Stewardship: Assist in ensuring the organization maintains sound financial health by reviewing and approving budgets, financial reports, and fundraising strategies. Help guide the board in financial decision-making and long-term sustainability planning.
  • Support & Mentorship: As needed, provide advice and mentorship to the Executive Director and staff, sharing your expertise.
  • Community Engagement: Foster relationships with key stakeholders, including donors, partners, government representatives, and other nonprofits, to strengthen the impact of Haiti Projects. Promote collaboration and encourage the growth of the organization's network.

Qualifications:

  • Passion for Haiti and International Development: A strong interest in and commitment to Haiti Projects’ mission of empowering women and building sustainable communities in Haiti. Experience working or volunteering in Haiti and/or fluency in Haitian Creole is a plus but not required.
  • Experience in Nonprofit Governance: We would prefer a candidate with prior experience serving on a nonprofit board or in a leadership position within an organization. Familiarity with nonprofit governance and best practices.
  • Fundraising Experience: Proven ability to assist with fundraising efforts, including engaging potential donors, cultivating relationships, and supporting fundraising campaigns.
  • Strategic Thinking: Ability to think strategically, work collaboratively with other board members, and contribute to long-term organizational goals.
  • Cultural Competence: Sensitivity to and respect for the cultures and experiences of communities in Haiti, with a commitment to inclusive and respectful decision-making.
  • Skills & Expertise: Strong leadership skills and experience in areas such as international development, social entrepreneurship, or marketing/public relations are desirable.
  • Commitment: Ability to commit time and energy to board responsibilities, including participation in meetings (quarterly or as scheduled), committee work, and organizational events.

Time Commitment:

Board members are expected to:

  • Attend quarterly board meetings (virtually)
  • Participate and contribute to development committee bi-monthly meetings
  • Be available for occasional check-ins with the Executive Director or Board Chair.
  • Actively engage in fundraising efforts and advocate for the organization in their networks.
