Go behind the scenes and work directly with local history!
Step into the past and help preserve the future as a Collections Volunteer at the Downers Grove Museum. This is a unique opportunity to work hands-on with historical artifacts, supporting our mission to collect, preserve, exhibit, and interpret the rich heritage of Downers Grove-from its founding in 1832 by Pierce Downer to its evolving place in local, national, and global history.
Volunteers will assist museum staff with the care, cataloging, and organization of collection items, contributing to projects that make our community’s history accessible and engaging. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at the museum’s award-winning efforts, including the recent renovation of the historic 1846 Blodgett House, recognized by the Association of Midwest Museums in 2023.
Whether you're a history buff, a museum enthusiast, or someone who loves detail-oriented work, this is your chance to make a tangible impact on preserving local heritage.

Description
Downers Grove was settled in 1832 by Pierce Downer, a Plainfield, Vermont native. Downer moved to Ellisburg, New York where he met and married his wife, Lucy. They were a farming family and eventually had five children. Downer's son, Stephen, moved to Fort Dearbon in Chicago to help with the construction of a lighthouse. Following the departure of his son, Pierce Downer decided to also move west in the pursuit of a new future. He reached Chicago and eventually traveled down the DuPage River and settled in an area that would become Downers Grove.
In 2023, The Association of Midwest Museums has recognized the Downers Grove Museum with the Best Practices Award for their work on the completed renovation of the 1846 Blodgett House.
