Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary and Gray’s Reef National
Marine Sanctuary Foundation partner with the Marine Advanced
Technology Education (MATE) Center to engage students in
learning ocean sciences, technologies, engineering, and
mathematics (STEM), in support of the sanctuaries' mission to
inspire ocean literacy and conservation through education.
MATE ROV building workshops and competitions prepare
students for secondary education and STEM careers, and offer
educators training and expertise in applied technologies.
This competition challenges teams of K-12 students to tackle
underwater missions, using robots they built themselves while
directly applying marine technology skills. Students also learn how
to create the necessary sensors, tools, and technologies to
monitor the health of aquatic habitats on our Blue Planet.
This year’s MATE ROV Competition will take place on Saturday,
May 10th, 2025 at the Chatham County Aquatic Center. The
Competition is open to all K-12 schools in the Southeast U.S. and
is hosted by Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary and the
National Marine Sanctuary Foundation. Teams have the
opportunity to compete in three classes: Scout, Navigator, and
Ranger.
This competition will be open to the public and will provide
volunteer opportunities. Volunteer roles range from judging the
competition to general support of the competition.

Mission Statement
The mission of Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary is to identify, protect, conserve, and enhance the natural and cultural resources, values, and qualities of the sanctuary for current and future generations.
Description
Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary is an ocean park teeming with life. The natural live-bottom habitats of the sanctuary are representative of others across the region. Volunteers at Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary have supported the sanctuary and contributed to its success for over forty years. This long-term support from volunteers is critical to every aspect of sanctuary including public events, community engagement, and providing programs at the Gray’s Reef Ocean Discovery Center.
The offshore sanctuary provides year-round opportunities for sport fishing, recreational diving, and boating. The research area within the sanctuary hosts one of the only designated no-take zones in the region, which makes Gray's Reef a catalyst for scientific research studying water quality, ocean noise, hurricane prediction, and climate change. Gray's Reef is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Office of National Marine Sanctuaries - the trustee for a network of underwater parks encompassing more than 620,000 square miles of marine and Great Lakes waters.
The 22 square-mile sanctuary protects a vibrant, hard-bottom ocean area off the Georgia coast, about 19 miles east of Sapelo Island, and 40 miles southeast of historic Savannah, Georgia. The average depth of the sanctuary is 65 feet.
