Living History & Historic Craft Demonstrator - Mabry Mill

ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

The Blue Ridge Parkway is recruiting volunteers to do living history and historic craft demonstrations at the world-famous Mabry Mill located at milepost 176 on the Blue Ridge Parkway near the Meadows of Dan, Virginia. The volunteer is asked to commit to at least 8 hours of volunteer service per week.


Major Duties

· Perform 18th and 19th-century historic trade(s) (i.e. fiber arts such as spinning & weaving, blacksmithing, cooking, wood working, etc...)

· May be required to wear accurate reproduction period attire

· Give interpretive demonstrations, answer questions and educate visitors about the history and culture of the Southern Appalachians to a wide range of audiences.

· Positively interact and engage with members of the public.

· Provide assistance during special events.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

· Knowledge of and/or experience in the 18th and 19th-century craft or skill that the volunteer will demonstrate (i.e. fashion, fiber arts, blacksmithing methods, cooking methods, leatherworking, coopering, children's games, or other period-appropriate activities).

· Possess a good attitude, an eagerness to learn, and a dedication to safety.

· Work outdoors in various weather conditions while dressed in period attire.

· Work both alone and as a member of a team.

· Interact with both large and small groups of people of various ages and backgrounds.

· Behave in a professional, courteous, and safe manner while representing the National Park Service, especially when in the presence of park visitors.

· Arrive on time at the proper location for volunteer duties, as agreed upon ahead of time by the National Park Service Volunteer Supervisor.

· Respect the park’s equipment and use it properly, as demonstrated during training/orientation.
