Make a Lifelong Impact in Just a Few Hours a Week!
Who We’re Looking For:
Adult or high school student volunteers (ages 16+) to tutor children aged 5+ in Sarasota County.
About Us:
We are the Rocket Phonics Foundation and the Literacy Council of Sarasota, two organizations passionate about helping children and their parents learn to read. This summer, we’re teaming up to make reading fun and transformative for local families.
Our program combines step-by-step guidance with engaging games that kids love. With Rocket Phonics, 90% of students go from below grade level to above grade level reading in just one year!
What You’ll Do:
- Tutor one-on-one using our easy-to-follow program.
- Play games with students (and yes, let them win!).
- Commit to just two hours a day, Monday-Thursday, tutoring one or more days per week.
Why It Matters:
Children learn to read from birth through third grade. By fourth grade, they read to learn. Falling behind in reading can lead to lifelong challenges, including a 50% unemployment rate as adults. By helping kids reach grade-level reading, you’ll break cycle of poverty and replace it with hope, empowerment, and success. Since a mother’s literacy level is the strongest indicator of what the child’s will be, the parent will be engaged in these tutoring sessions along with their child.

Mission Statement
The Literacy Council of Sarasota Inc., a not-for-profit 501 (c) 3 adult education organization, is building a more literate community by helping adults and families improve English language communications skills through personalized, needs-based tutoring and small group instruction.
Description
With the generous help of donors, we are able to provide these services:
-Workplace Literacy Program
-Basic Literacy Education
-English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
More than 2.6 million adults in Florida - or 20 percent of those 16 and older - lack even the most basic reading skills, according to estimates by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Since 1978, The Literacy Council Sarasota (LCS) has been helping adults (16 years of age and older) improve their basic reading, writing, comprehension and communication skills through one-on-one and small group tutoring. LCS customizes teaching to individual needs, providing a unique focus on enabling adult learners to function better within the frameworks of their own life situations.
Today, we continue our vital mission of building a more literate Sarasota, with the help of more than 250 volunteers and tutors who work with adult learners one-on-one at no cost. LCS has been nominated in 2008 and 2009 for the Frank G. Berlin, Sr. Small Business of the Year Awards presented by The Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce in the Non-Profit Organization of the Year category. The Literacy Council of Sarasota's office is housed at the Glasser Schoenbaum Human Service Center in Sarasota, FL.
