ORGANIZATION: American Red Cross - National Capital & Greater Chesapeake Region

Disaster Relief

Purpose:
Be prepared to respond effectively to disasters. Preparedness is crucial! Training ensures readiness to assist during emergencies like hurricanes, enhancing our ability to support those affected efficiently. This role signifies readiness to train for future deployments. Training is self-paced and must be completed within 4 weeks.

Local Operations:
No long-term commitment needed for local disaster response. For deployments outside the region, availability for 14 consecutive days is required, unless licensed in a health specialty (10-day requirement for health professionals). Tasks include sheltering, feeding, supply distribution, logistics, and other non-licensed activities.

Responsibilities:
Do not apply if already a Disaster Cycle Services Volunteer. Responsibilities vary by assignment, commonly including shelter support:

  • Reception and registration

  • Dormitory management

  • Feeding assistance

  • Information dissemination

  • Supply management


Provide excellent client service and complete 3.5 hours of virtual self-paced training.

Time Commitment:
Upon training completion, be available for 14 consecutive days for deployments (local or regional). Volunteers may need to travel outside the region for major disasters, accepting potential hardships like staff shelter accommodation or limited amenities. In-person presence may require masks in specific situations.
