ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

"Rangers Assisting Visitors in Need " (RAVNs) assist Mount Rainier's Law Enforcement staff in providing visitor services. This is a NON-Law Enforcement volunteer position. Work assignments may include but are not limited to:


  • Make safety the highest priority.
  • Ambulance Driver (must complete NPS Emergency Vehicle Operator Course).
  • Provide medical assistance as appropriate at current certified level and within scope of care.
  • File lost and found reports as needed.
  • Remain highly visible to park visitors while conducting patrols in an effort to provide visitors with information, assistance, or directions.
  • Keep vehicles and emergency equipment in a state of readiness at all times.
  • Provide traffic control associated with congested areas (upper and lower Paradise parking lots), disabled vehicles, and motor vehicle accidents.
  • Verify reports of disabled vehicles.
  • Provide assistance to motorists as appropriate, i.e. if we are unable to help the visitor, make calls for assistance.
  • Provide basic mechanical assistance to motorists to include, but not limited to: battery jumpstarts, providing fuel, changing tires, and providing basic hand tools.
  • Conduct foot and vehicle patrols throughout the district to assist visitors in need and to check for compliance of park rules and regulations.
  • Provide courtesy shuttles to park visitors, as appropriate.
  • Provide courtesy transportation to rangers or other park staff requiring pick-up or drop off at trailheads.
  • Provide assistance during EMS calls including carrying gear, assisting with family members of patients, or transporting stranded patrol vehicles.
  • Answer visitor questions and provide directions.

Special Qualification: RAVN volunteers must possess a valid state driver’s license. They also need to enjoy talking and interacting with the public (sometimes under adverse conditions). Law enforcement background is not a requirement; however, it is essential that volunteers know when (and when NOT) to assist with hazards, violations and other situations. The volunteer should possess the ability to get along with a variety of people and should be sensitive to cultural and language differences. They should be able to take directions and feedback from a number of different sources, but also be able to work independently and make decisions with good judgment. This position requires a background check.


Training:

Volunteer will participate in park orientation session; safety training; maintenance procedures; and on-the-job training.
