The Hanka Homestead Finnish Museum is located on its original site and was homesteaded in 1896 by the Finnish immigrant family headed by Herman Hanka. The farm is an eight-building, 40 acre outdoor/open door museum that tells the story of how immigrant families, using their skills, knowledge, and background, were able to survive and thrive in the wilderness of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan despite setbacks and minimal resources.
Work will occur on June 7 th from 10 am - 1 pm. Volunteers will gather prior to the start of work for a safety briefing and introduction to the site.
Please bring plenty of water in a reusable water bottle. Sunscreen and a hat are always recommended. Tools, gloves, water, and any necessary PPE will be provided. Be prepared for variable weather and lots of bugs!
Duties:
Use hand tools to cut and clear vegetation and plant growth around buildings, fences, and other historic landscapes.
Sorting and restacking lumber pile
Indoor cleaning and organization
Pick-up modern-day trash for disposal.
Lift up to 50 pounds
Physical Demands: Standing, walking, bending and may be required during outdoors on uneven services in a variety of weather conditions. Lifting of moderately heavy objects and using a variety of hand tools (shears, loppers, hand saws, etc.) may be necessary.
Minimum Age: 16 years
Minimum Time Requirement: Volunteer event from 2-4 hours
