ORGANIZATION: Friends of Karen

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

The Friends of Karen's Back to School program gives parents peace of mind and ensures children will be prepared for school, feel well taken care of and hopeful to start the new year . We plan to give every child, ill children and their siblings, a backpack filled with the supplies essential for a successful school year.

We are looking for volunteers to help set up the Back-to-School packing stations . This would involve bringing boxes of school supplies from our upstairs storage closet to our downstairs packing room . The boxes will be unpacked, and the supplies will be organized to prepare for the Back-to-School packing program. Volunteers should be comfortable lifting at least 50lbs and carrying items down one flight of stairs.

Mission Statement

Friends of Karen provides emotional, financial and advocacy support for children with a life-threatening illness and their families, in order to help keep them strong, functioning and able to cope. Friends of Karen is a registered 501(c)(3) charity and the only organization in the New York metropolitan area to provide a comprehensive range of services -- at no cost -- to families caring for a child with a life-threatening illness.

Description

Friends of Karen started in 1978 with one family; one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen. Since then, we have assisted more than 18,000 children and their families.

Friends of Karen is the only organization that provides vital and comprehensive support at no cost to families in the New York Tri-State region caring for a child battling cancer or another life-threatening illness, from diagnosis through treatment.

Through personal advocacy, our team of experienced professionals - social workers, child life specialists, arts therapists - ensures that each family member receives the support they need to stay functioning and able to cope during a crisis that affects every member of the family.
