About Us

Ten Thousand Villages of Orlando is a mission-driven nonprofit dedicated to promoting fair trade and ethical retail practices. As we transition to an independent, rebranded nonprofit retail store, we remain deeply committed to supporting artisans around the world through sustainable partnerships.

We are currently seeking a passionate and experienced legal professional to join our Board of Directors as we navigate this pivotal chapter of independence and rebranding.

Position Overview

We are seeking a volunteer board member with legal expertise to provide governance support and high-level legal guidance during our organization’s transition from a corporate affiliate to an independent nonprofit retail entity. This board member will help ensure legal compliance, identify potential risks, and support strategic decision-making as we rebrand and restructure.

This is a volunteer, unpaid board position with an expected term of one to two years. This role does not require you to provide formal legal representation, unless agreed upon separately with the board and in accordance with our conflict-of-interest policies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide legal insight and guidance to the board on matters related to:

    • Nonprofit governance and compliance

    • Separation from our former corporate entity

    • Rebranding, intellectual property, and trademark considerations

    • Contracts, leases, and vendor agreements

    • Employment and volunteer policies

  • Participate actively in board meetings (monthly or quarterly)

  • Collaborate with other board members to support the organization’s mission and strategic goals

  • Ensure that the organization meets all legal and ethical standards as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit

Qualifications
  • J.D. from an accredited law school and active license to practice law in Florida (preferred)

  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: nonprofit law, corporate restructuring, intellectual property, retail or employment law

  • Prior board service or nonprofit volunteer experience (a plus, but not required)

  • Passionate about fair trade, ethical sourcing, and the mission of Ten Thousand Villages

  • Excellent judgment, integrity, and ability to work collaboratively

Commitment
  • Attend regular board meetings (in-person or virtually)

  • Estimated 1-4 hours/week depending on upcoming legal needs

  • Serve a 1- to 3-year term, with potential to renew
