The Damien Center Computer Lab aims to provide equitable internet access and information technology literacy to clients and patients of the Damien Center, as well as to participants in various Damien Center programs. Volunteer Digital Literacy Coaches will help Damien Center clients, patients, and/or program participants use our computers and internet connection to accomplish a multitude of online goals and tasks including, but not limited to: sending and receiving emails, browsing online for specific services or items, accessing important websites, making online payments, searching for employment or volunteer opportunities, creating, editing and/or printing important documents, scheduling appointments, arranging transportation and travel, and a variety of other possibilities. This is a great opportunity for current or former administrative professionals, university students, retired adults, Damien Center clients, patients, and program participants, and anyone with free time during the week.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Ensuring that lab patrons acknowledge the lab policies and procedures, including helping them sign into the lab or registering new users with login credentials as needed.

2. Assisting Damien Center clients, patients, and program participants with basic computer literacy functions like opening and searching for emails, browsing on the internet, and finding specific computer programs like Microsoft Word and Google Sheets.

3. Helping lab patrons print, collate and organize files as needed, to a reasonable degree.

4. Ensuring that lab patrons do not have food or drinks within proximity to lab equipment including, but not limited to, computers or workstations, printers, or other hardware or technology.

5. Helping Damien Center patrons access a variety of online forms, including our online Client Grievance Form, New Volunteer Online Orientation, CERVIS Volunteer Database, and the Damien Center Online Patient Portal. Training on this will be provided.

6. Utilizing computer usage monitoring software, if applicable, in accordance with the lab policies and procedures to monitor online activity by lab patrons as dictated/needed. Training on this will be provided.

7. Ensure that lab patrons do not download any malicious, unwanted, explicit or unnecessary programs or materials onto the computers. Training on this will be provided.

  • Be patient and encouraging towards digital learners of all skill and ability levels.
  • Have a friendly and approachable demeanor - be a people person!
  • Strong communication skills - written, verbal and/or demonstrative
  • Be sensitive to, and respectful of, an inclusive and LGBTQIA2S+ friendly clientele and staff.
  • Have a desire to help others obtain computer literacy and internet literacy skills
  • Basic understanding of online search engines and work suites (like Google, Microsoft, Facebook, etc.).
  • Folks with experience with or background in information technology, IT systems, administration, computer literacy, digital literacy, education, HR and employment are strongly encouraged to apply!

Physical Requirements:

  • Shifts will become available on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9:00am - 12:00pm with plans to expand, beginning the week of May 12th.
  • We ask that volunteers in this area consider making a recurring or regular commitment of at least 3 shifts per month to be considered with priority. The ideal candidate will be available for at least 1 shift per week for at least one full month. Those who cannot meet this requirement will still be considered, but due to the nature of this program, preference will be given to volunteers who know they will be available for recurring or regular shifts each month.
