ORGANIZATION: USDA Forest Service

Join the Forest Service as a Heritage Program Volunteer and help preserve and manage cultural resources on public lands! This role is ideal for individuals interested in history, archaeology, or records management and offers a mix of office based and occasional fieldwork opportunities on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, Supervisor's Office in Sparks, Nevada.


Volunteer Opportunity: Heritage Program Volunteer

Agency: Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, USFS

Location: Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, Supervisor's Office in Sparks, Nevada

Commitment : Flexible, minimum 4 hours per week. Monday-Friday.



Responsibilities:

Organize, scan and file heritage report documents

  • Digitize historical and archaeological documents
  • Requires standing for extended periods, knowledge of office machinery (xerox), organizational skills

Perform data entry and compile heritage data into NRM system

  • Assist with entering and maintaining cultural resource data in digital databases
  • Requires sitting for extended periods, knowledge of basic computer skills, use of computer applications database management and data analysis, organizational skills, will be trained by FS staff in NRM applications

Mapping and GIS Support

  • Help with basic spatial data organization and mapping
  • Requires sitting for extended periods, knowledge of basic GIS programs ideal, but will be trained by FS staff in GIS applications

Fieldwork Assistance (Occasional)

  • Support archaeological surveys and site documentation alongside Forest Service heritage staff.
  • Requires walking on uneven / adverse terrain, ability to be outside for extended periods of time in all types of weather conditions, terrain, and elevations, work may take place in an extremely remote environment and use of personal equipment is required (e.g., field clothes and boots, backpack, water bottles, etc.), will be trained by FS archaeologists in archaeological field applications

Qualifications

  • Interest in history, archaeology, or public land management
  • Preferred, background or coursework in archaeology, history, anthropology, or related field (not required)
  • Experience with archival research, data entry, or mapping is a plus
  • Attention to detail and ability to work independently
  • Basic computer skills (training provided for database and scanning procedures)
  • Willingness to work outdoors for occasional fieldwork (hiking short distances may be required)
