Mission Statement

North Lawndale College Preparatory Charter High School’s mission is to equip scholars with the academic skills and the personal resilience necessary to get to and through college and become transformative leaders in their community.

Description

School Type: public charter school- tuition free.
Grade Level: 9,10,11,12.
School Summary: North Lawndale College Prep (NLCP), founded in 1998, is a nonselective, tuition-free public charter school serving students across two campuses. A Title 1 school, 100% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, 10% are homeless, and 98% are Black. Our leadership reflects our students: 60% of leadership and 44% of staff are Black women, and 75% of staff are Black. In North Lawndale, 38% of residents live in poverty, and fewer than 12% hold college degrees. As a college prep school, NLCP partners with families to prepare students for higher education, focusing on academics and social-emotional growth. Our graduation rates exceed city averages-96.3% at Christiana and 95.6% at Collins in 2021, compared to 80.2% citywide. Of nearly 2,000 alumni, 99% have been accepted to college, and they earn degrees at twice the rate of Chicago Public Schools students. NLCP’s rigorous curriculum fosters critical thinking, persuasive writing, and extended research projects. We set high expectations with strong support. Committed to generational change, we encourage alumni to return. Currently, 15% of staff are alumni, with a goal of 25% in two years.
