Plum Orchard is an 1898 Classical Revival mansion built by Lucy Carnegie for her son, George Carnegie and his wife, Margaret Thaw that was donated to the National Park Service in the 1970s. Plum Orchard offers a glimpse into Edwardian High Society at the turn of the 20th century and the importance pf recreation, indulgence, and rejuvenation in nature.


Plum Orchard Docents provide detailed 45 minute tours through the property to the public up to 3 times per day which include climbing multiple flights of stairs. They perform light maintenance such as sweeping, dusting, and vacuuming in down times. Tours are given in English and additional language skills are beneficial but not required.


This position requires on-site housing on Cumberland Island National Seashore. Minimum of 30 days and maximum 60-day service availability for non-local volunteers. NO PETS. Volunteers are required to provide 32 work hours a week for housing. Housing is private furnished apartment(s) on remote island. Work week schedules to be determined with supervisor.
