Being retired doesn’t mean you’ve lost your spark!!
Start 1 Spark is hosting a Car Cruise-In to celebrate the end of the year for Salem Church Middle School's Cars4Girls club. Students have met race car drivers, learned about the mechanics, and discovered how custom designs are created. Now, it's time to see cool cars! As a volunteer, you will direct visiting cars to the blacktop, position cars for students to see safely, and oversee students engaging with visiting drivers. And you get to see cool cars too!
Volunteer Duties & Responsibilities:
- Set-up cones and markers identifying where drivers should park with ample space inbetween for students to see cars
- Provide directions to arriving cars to the blacktop
- Help teachers and staff keep students on blacktop and in a safe environment
- Oversee student voting on their favorite car
- Safely direct cars out of the area at the conclusion of the event
- Support clean-up efforts by collecting cones, signs, and other materials used
Qualifications, Skills, & Requirements:
- Strong communicator who can clearly provide instructions
- Aware of surroundings and can maintain a safe environment for large groups
- Warm personality who will gently encourage students to ask questions and engage with drivers

Start 1 Spark envisions a future where every student has access to the extracurricular programs offered at school so they can be a part of their school community. By participating in art, music, clubs, and athletics, students develop skills necessary to thrive in adulthood such as teamwork, communication, cooperation, and leadership. As a nonprofit supporting Henrico and Chesterfield middle schools, Start 1 Spark believes extracurricular activities are not a luxury but a foundation for relationships and mentorships that give a student a sense of belonging.
Description
Founded in 2021, Start 1 Spark partners with area middle schools in strengthening their extracurricular programs. With our support, a music program has more than doubled in size, earned two superior ratings, started a national music honors society, and confidently performed at community events and competitions. A drama program that was dormant for more than four years has been relaunched with the assistance of volunteers building set pieces. In our most popular program, Fuel for Fun, Start 1 Spark and volunteers have donated, assembled, and delivered over 9,750 snack kits for student-athletes on game days.
