DISCLAIMER: You MUST be 18 years of or older to volunteer in this position. There are no housing opportunities for this position. Orientation and training will be provided.


Help visitors step back in time and appreciate the stories of Lewis and Clark Expedition. Volunteers will wear period Lewis and Clark expedition clothing and present programs bringing history to life. Period clothing includes leather pants, linen shirts, wool vest and moccasins. When presenting programs at the fort you are yourself and the costume is a prop.

Programs, demonstrations and informal interpretation occur at the replica of Fort Clatsop. Programs include talks on the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the people the expedition met, the plants and animals recorded in the journals and the tools of survival: Flintlock muzzleloaders.

Anyone 18 and older are welcome to apply. Historic weapons demonstrators must be at least 18 years old.

DUTIES:

  • Completes annual training in the use and interpretation of historic weapons, 12 hours, and passes all competency evaluations as necessary, if wanting to give a tool of survival program.
  • Complete annual training, 24 hours, for interpretive programs featuring the use of material culture items (clothing, tools, etc.) of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
  • Volunteers may be asked to research, prepare and present interpretive talks and demonstrations based on their skills and interest.
  • Cleaning and maintaining weapons.
  • Assistance with events both on and off site.
  • Willingness to dress in period-correct, male-presenting clothing, regardless of gender identity.


KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR THE POSITON

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills,
  • Ability to work with a team,
  • Must be able to work outdoors for long periods of time while wearing historic clothing.
