The candidate will work within the park’s Interpretation & Visitor’s Services Division to support the needs of Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve. Candidates with prior experience within a certain field is preferred, but not necessary as each position will work alongside staff and have the opportunity to pursue trainings specific to their individual interests. Applicants are not required to possess prior experience or knowledge, but must demonstrate a willingness to work as a team, learn new skills, solve problems, and be mentored. In addition, applicants must be willing to fulfill a minimum Skillbridge term of 8 weeks. The skills learned throughout the length of these programs can be applied to a wide variety of career fields and prepare the candidate for another federal job, but with the Department of the Interior.


The division works to provide engaging and interpretive experience to the park visitors that help foster a connection to the natural and cultural resources around them.


The person selected for this position will inform visitors about park facilities and resources by staffing the visitor center information desk and through formal or informal programs and conversations. Duties are performed on or off-site at locations designated by the Supervisory Park Ranger. The incumbent will learn about the park’s resources by reviewing published maps, park research materials, and other documents previously prepared by park rangers and other professionals and by park staff. They will aid in connection with single or annual celebrations related to the programs and themes of the park and assist in the operations of special events.


As assigned, they may perform administrative duties, e.g., gathering routine information for reports, compilation of statistical data, filing, creating engaging digital content for the park’s social media platforms, website, app, and also assisting with opening and securing the historic buildings, etc.
