ORGANIZATION: USDA Forest Service

Come volunteer and make a difference on the East Zone of the Mt. Hood National Forest! We are eagerly seeking folks to assist us with basic maintenance and upkeep of developed recreation sites across the Barlow and Hood River Ranger Districts of the forest!

The duties and responsibilities will include cleaning and basic maintenance of vault (non-flush outhouse-style) restroom facilities, to include changing toilet paper, wiping down restroom surfaces, removal of garbage from units, and reporting to the responsible official any vandalism and/or damage that occurs. Other duties will include patrolling around sites for litter, monitoring the condition of other facilities (picnic tables, fire rings, shelters, etc.) and reporting their general condition, assisting with signage/kiosk posting needs, and interacting with the recreating public. An appropriate Forest Service vehicle, training, and all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be made available for successful accomplishment of the aforementioned duties. Must have a valid state-issued driver’s license, be able to pass a background check, and be comfortable driving a standard 4x4 pick-up truck on rougher gravel roads.


Recreation Site Steward Responsibilities

· The Recreation Site Steward plays a key role in the operations and maintenance of dozens of small campgrounds, trailheads, snow parks, and picnic sites on the East Zone of the Mt. Hood National Forest, in coordination with US Forest Service staff and interns

· Maintaining vault toilet facilities: sanitizing surfaces, stocking toilet paper, emptying trash receptacles, sweeping, and painting as needed

· Greeting forest visitor and educating them about recreational opportunities and required fees

· Participating in small construction and projects including sign installation, picnic table repairs, fire ring installations, ground trash cleanup, information kiosk installation/painting, and vandalism remediation

· Volunteers are required to work at least 24 hours each week. Housing in the form of an RV camp site with full hook-ups MAY be available. If available, the housing will be located in the community of Parkdale, OR.


About the duty location:

Duties are performed on the East Zone of the Mt. Hood National Forest and based out of Parkdale, OR on the Hood River Ranger District. Parkdale is a small community of about 300 individuals and includes a grocery store, gas station, brewery, hardware store, multiple restaurants, and a laundromat. Parkdale sits near the base of Mt. Hood, Oregon's tallest mountain at over 11,200 feet. Summer recreation opportunities abound, with easy access to world class hiking, mountain biking, fishing, hunting, camping, paddling, windsurfing, and kiteboarding nearby in the summer months. Hood River, OR is located 20 minutes to the north and features a full-service community of over 7,000 people in the heart of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.
