Recruiting Organization: Project Somos Guatemala
This position involves leading the implementation of the English program with preschool and primary school children, as well as with staff and community members. It requires an English teacher who is flexible and capable of teaching both young children and adults with varying levels of education and training. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain a unique experience working in a small, rural community, living onsite at the project.
The responsibilities are as follows, keeping in mind that the program may change and develop as it grows:
Teaching English Classes:All children, association staff members, and young women in the cooking course receive English classes, as well as community members if we choose to invite them as the program expands. The English teacher is expected to plan and conduct each class included in their schedule and submit lesson plans to the Director of Educational Programs for review.
Use of English in the Project:The teacher will be required to use as much English as possible when interacting with children and staff on-site. Although students' initial levels will be low, it will be important to create an English-learning culture throughout the project and to use English as much as possible throughout the day, not just during class.
Lesson Plans and English Materials:The English teacher will be required to complete lesson plans for their classes and submit them weekly to the Director of Education for review. They will also be responsible for creating all necessary materials for their classes, requesting additional materials from the Director of Education if needed. At various times throughout the year, volunteers create English-language materials for the classroom. The teacher will be responsible for receiving, storing, maintaining, and using these materials as needed. It will also be important for the teacher to communicate what materials they need so that volunteers can create them.
