Carnegie Science Center is seeking volunteers to assist with our new Science of Cooking camp during our summer camps.
Volunteers should like working with kids, have e xperience in the culinary arts, and/or be interested in the science of cooking.
Position Title: Summer Camps Adult Volunteer
Supervisor: Manager of Camps and Public Experiences
Goal or Purpose of the Position:
- Carnegie Science Center connects people and science, igniting curiosity that endures for a lifetime.
- Explore the area of informal science education with the Science Camp team at Carnegie Science Center. You will spend time behind the scenes and in the classroom assisting with daily camp activities under the supervision of licensed, professional educators.
Responsibilities:
- Assist the camp team in the implementation of exciting, hands-on science education.
- Assist instructors with activities-gathering supplies, helping individual children, demonstrating how to complete tasks.
- Help monitor groups of children in a variety of situations including in the classrooms and on the museum floors.
- Assist staff in monitoring campers during lunches.
Parameters:
* Volunteers will not be the primary instructor, will not discipline children* or directly engage with parent
o *Volunteers can remind campers about behavioral expectations and intervene if there is an immediate safety issue. If it is not immediate or the behavior has escalated, volunteers should speak with camp staff.
* Volunteers will not be alone with campers and will not take campers to the restroom
* Volunteers will not administer first aid
Time Commitment:
- Summer only
- Minimum of 1 week of camp, Monday-Friday, 8am-4pm + mandatory volunteer orientation + camps orientation
Qualifications:
· Strong communications skills.
· Excellent customer service skills.
· Organization.
· Ability to function effectively in a team environment.
· Passion for the values of first-hand engagement with science.
· Experience working with children.

Clearances
- Upon acceptance into the program, all volunteers are required to provide and pay for background checks and clearances. Act 33 and 34 Clearances are free for volunteers.
- Volunteers who have lived in Pennsylvania for at least 10 years must have their Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 33) and Criminal Record Check Clearance (Act 34).
- Volunteers who have lived in Pennsylvania for less than 10 years must have their Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 33) and Criminal Record Check Clearance (Act 34) plus an FBI Fingerprint Clearance (Act 114).
