Mission Statement
Founded in 1992, the Heart of America Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. It is entirely volunteer-run. Heart of America Humane Society doesn’t run a shelter; instead, the dedicated volunteers partner with two Kansas City area shelters to help their dogs and cats find their forever homes.
Description
Heart of America Humane Society is a 100% volunteer organization working to find good homes for animals. We do not have a shelter of our own, instead we have created a cooperative partnership with the Lee’s Summit Municipal Animal Shelter and Kansas City Kansas Animal Services. We have adoption events most Saturdays at PetSmart Olathe, PetSmart Overland Park, and PetSmart Lee’s Summit.
In addition to working with local shelters, we also have a network of volunteer foster homes. Fostering gives us the opportunity to observe and evaluate an animal’s behavior and traits outside of the intimidating shelter environment. That foster knowledge helps us create a much better match between an animal’s personality and their new human(s).
Recently, we have expanded and we now also have an experienced Outreach Team that goes out into the community to assist people and their animals to ensure the animals' basic needs are being et.
We also have a TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release) Team that is actively involved in getting community cats spayed and neutered in order to control the cat population in our community.
