Volunteer Opportunity: Develop the Lokono-English Dictionary for the Council of Native Caribbean Heritage (C.O.N.C.H)
The Council of Native Caribbean Heritage (C.O.N.C.H) is excited to announce a volunteer opportunity to contribute to the creation of a comprehensive Lokono-English Dictionary on Webonary. This project is vital for the preservation and revitalization of the Lokono language, and we are seeking passionate volunteers who are eager to make a meaningful impact on the language resources available to the Lokono community.
Who We're Looking For: We invite volunteers with experience in Excel and those studying fields such as linguistics, education, or English to join this important project. If you have an interest in language documentation, linguistic research, or cultural preservation, this is a wonderful opportunity for you.
Key Responsibilities:
Entering data from Excel spreadsheets into the Combine online app.
Working with complex spreadsheet data derived from the Rapid Word Collection questionnaire developed by SIL.
Assisting with the integration of dictionary PDFs into the digital dictionary platform.
Collaborating with the team to ensure accuracy and consistency in the dictionary data.
Project Overview: This dictionary will combine the works of two holders of copyrighted dictionaries, allowing us to create a much-needed resource for the Lokono community. The completed dictionary will be freely accessible online through Webonary.org, providing valuable linguistic resources for future generations and empowering the Lokono people in their language preservation efforts.

Contribute to a meaningful project that will preserve the Lokono language.
Gain experience working with linguistic data and online dictionary platforms.
Collaborate with a passionate team dedicated to supporting indigenous Caribbean heritage.

Mission Statement
The Council of Native Caribbean Heritage (C.O.N.C.H.), guided by indigenous leadership, is dedicated to strengthening Native Caribbean communities. We achieve this by fostering sustainable development through initiatives such as economic projects (e.g., apiaries), language revitalization (e.g., teaching resources), healthcare access (e.g., medical missions to Yateras, Cuba), and community empowerment (e.g., grant writing training and NGO development support).
Description
The Council of Native Caribbean Heritage (C.O.N.C.H.) is dedicated to supporting Indigenous Caribbean communities-especially the Lokono (Arawak) Nation-through sustainable development, cultural preservation, and health equity. Our key initiatives include:
Beekeeping for Livelihoods - In partnership with Sweet Naturals, we support Lokono villages in Guyana (Wakapoa, Pakuri, Moraikobai) with training, hives, and tools to produce quality honey and generate sustainable income.
Language Revitalization - We're creating lasting resources for the Lokono language: an online dictionary on Webonary, bilingual children’s books on GitHub, a Lokono YouTube channel, and teacher-developed materials. We also support the Academic Council for Lokono-Ajian and are building a multi-Arawak language archive.
Medical Missions to Cuba - In Yateras, Cuba, we provide essential medications via MAP International, with support from the U.S. BIS. These missions improve access to care in remote communities.
Indigenous Grant Warriors - We train Lokono leaders in grant writing and NGO development to empower self-driven community initiatives in language, health, and sustainability.
Join us in preserving heritage, empowering communities, and building a more equitable future.
