ORGANIZATION: THURMAN BRISBEN HOMELESS SHELTER INC (Brisben Center)

Looking to give back by feeding the residents of the Brisben Center? We are always looking for individuals and groups to plan, provide and serve breakfast, lunch or dinner for our residents.

Meals are served on schedule:

  • Breakfast: 8:00am
  • Lunch: 12:00pm
  • Dinner: 6:00pm

Groups should arrive 90 minutes to 2 hours before their scheduled serving time.

Important Information for Meal Program Volunteers:

  • We prioritize groups that can purchase, prepare and serve meals with a focus on dinners. We do have product onsite that can be supplemented if coordinated with the kitchen manager.
  • Children under 16 are not permitted to be in the kitchen unless it is to help serve. Anyone under 18 is not permitted to use grills, ovens or steamers. Children outside of the kitchen should still be supervised at all times.
  • The meal should follow USDA guidelines and include a protein, grain, carb, dairy, fresh vegetables, and/or fruits. These can be combined, i.e Spaghetti with meat sauce is a grain/card and protein.
  • Your groups menu should be provided to the Kitchen Manager one week prior to the group's scheduled serving time and day.
  • Please call a week ahead to confirm the number of residents being fed.
  • Volunteers may bring unprepared food for later use. Contact the Kitchen Manager for delivery and storage details. Please make sure to label all food for your meals so it is not used before the time to prepare and serve.
  • Please make sure to have a Point of Contact (Name, phone number, email) that can be reached to coordinate meals and confirmation of dates. Each group must have one.
  • If there is a last minute shortage of group volunteers or a change/cancellations needs to be made, immediately notify the Kitchen Manager (540.899.9853 x 112) and the Control Desk. (540.899.9853 ext. 110)
  • All meal volunteers must wear appropriate clothing and hair clothing (as necessary) as well as gloves. Always use health-preserving sanitation. Proper handwashing and safe food handling procedures are required.

Please see the below calendar to select a date and time. Once you have selected the date and time, please reach out to Tammy Hopkins (thopkins@brisbencenter.org or 540.899.9853 x 112):

The last Monday of every month and the 2nd the last Friday of every month will be dedicated to individuals who may not have a group to come in and meet other individuals to help prepare and serve meals.

About THURMAN BRISBEN HOMELESS SHELTER INC (Brisben Center)

Location:

471 Central Road, FREDERICKSBRG, VA 22401, US

Mission Statement

Providing temporary shelter and equip residents for employability to resolve poverty and obtain and sustain housing.

Description

The Brisben Center has 37 years of experience with serving the homeless adults and children of the counties of Spotsylvania, Stafford, King George, Caroline and the City of Fredericksburg.

We do so in a 16,000 sf clean, modern. safe, congregate facility in which families with children and single adults may find a place to transform surviving to thriving.
We have separate dormitories for single males and for single females. Families with children reside in single occupancy family rooms with full bathrooms.

Our theory of change, based on decades of experience and extensive research, is simple. If a person is capable, motivated, and accountable to their results-based plan, and if they engage with effective, targeted resources, they will advance their health & sobriety, social relationships, livable wage
employment, financial literacy, community engagement, and good parenting skills.
