Volunteer with Adults with Disabilities in a Community Outing Summer Camp

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: FAR Therapeutic Arts and Recreation

FAR is seeking volunteers to help make our 2025 summer camps something to remember!

About FAR Explorers:

A three or six-day opportunity for adults with disabilities, FAR Explorers takes campers on a variety of community outings. Supervised by certified recreational therapists, campers are encouraged to interact with peers, gain independence, and have fun! Volunteers accompany each outing as supportive peer mentors. They connect with campers while helping the group stay organized.

The ideal FAR Explorers volunteer is supportive, kind, punctual, and organized. While experience with individuals is helpful, it is not required. Volunteers must be 13 years of age or older and commit to attending at least one full week of camp. Volunteer hours will be documented; letters of completion are available upon request.

FAR Explorers runs Monday-Wednesday. Volunteers have the option to volunteer for one or both weeks.

Mission Statement

Enriching the lives of individuals with disabilities, regardless of age, through the power of creative arts and recreational therapies.

Description

FAR Therapeutic Arts and Recreation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization providing creative arts therapies to over 1,600 individuals with disabilities. Founded in 1951, we work with clients of all ages, introducing them to new activities and experiences, helping them gain a deeper understanding of themselves and showing them new ways to communicate how they feel.

Through the dedication of our highly-trained staff and the support of partners and collaborating organizations throughout Metro Detroit, we offer music, art, dance/movement and recreational therapy for children and adults with a variety of diagnoses. We go into schools in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Counties to provide music, art, dance/movement and recreational therapy for students receiving special education services. We work to expose our clients to new avenues of expression which serve to improve how they relate and interact with their environments and families.
