May 2025 Community Garden Day at 24th Street Elementary
ORGANIZATION: Garden School Foundation
Please visit the new page to apply.
Join Garden School Foundation for a relaxing garden-based volunteer day at the 24th Street Elementary Garden on Saturday, May 17th!
Why: Our volunteers play a vital role in the work that we do at GSF. Your volunteer efforts help keep our gardens beautiful and edible throughout the school year. Your hard work makes it possible for our students to enjoy the garden and harvest herbs and veggies year-round for cooking classes. Our volunteers not only enhance the educational experience of our students but also help share the magical world of gardening with kids and their families across LA. At May's Community Garden Day, volunteers will help refresh the garden as well as enjoy garden-based wellness activities!
Who: Garden School Foundation provides in-depth garden-based education to youth at Title I schools in Los Angeles, strengthening connections between food justice, environmental awareness, and community health. By using the full transformative potential of school gardens as teaching sites, we nurture a healthy and mindful generation of children that care for their bodies, their communities, and the earth. We currently serve seven Title I elementary schools, reaching over 3,000 students and their families each year.
What to Expect:
Physical garden activities may include:
mulching
watering
weeding
clearing
planting beds
pruning trees
raking
sign painting
and more!
Wellness programming at this event will include:
30-minute kid-friendly yoga class followed by a 5 minute breathwork session at 9:30 am
30-minute hands-on workshop led by a Master Gardener about zombie gardening at 11:00 am. This workshop will offer families a take-home guide to getting started
We'll break at 11:30 am to share a light lunch provided by our partners at Sprouts!
Attendees will also access a range of bilingual (English/Spanish) take-home resources about composting, local mental health services, and talking to children about climate-change related mental health challenges.
What's Required:
Volunteers should wear close-toe shoes and loose, comfy clothes that are school-appropriate.
We encourage volunteers to bring their own water bottles and sun protection. We'll provide all the necessary tools and supplies.
You don't need any gardening experience to participate - just a willingness to dig in and get those hands dirty!
The garden is located at 2055 W 24th Street. There is ample street parking by the school.
GSF will have a table set up in front of the school where we will check you in and ask you to sign our Volunteer Waiver.
