Outbound Recruiter

Note: This is a remote, part-time volunteer position.

Bring your creativity and hustle to help us find untapped, mission-aligned talent.

We’re seeking an Outbound Recruiter who’s energized by the challenge of actively sourcing volunteers - not just reviewing applications. If you love outreach, research, and engaging with people where they are (not just where they apply), this role offers the chance to make a big impact on our growing, fully remote team.

Who We Are

WhoWhatWhy is a nonprofit investigative news organization producing deep-dive journalism on the most pressing issues of our time. We’re powered by skilled volunteers and a small core staff - from students to seasoned pros - who believe in ethical, independent journalism free from corporate or political influence.

About the Role

As an Outbound Recruiter, you’ll:

  • Research and identify external sources of talent (e.g., LinkedIn, university boards, online forums, affinity groups, job boards, etc.)

  • Reach out directly to potential candidates with personalized messaging and info about our open roles

  • Support role-specific sourcing for departments like Editorial, Marketing, Operations, and Donor Development

  • Share WhoWhatWhy’s mission and opportunities in external communities and networks

  • Maintain basic records of outreach and candidate leads for team follow-up

  • Collaborate with Inbound Recruiters and the broader HR team to align efforts and priorities

What We’re Looking For
  • Interest or experience in recruitment, sourcing, or talent outreach

  • Comfortable using LinkedIn and other platforms to find and message potential candidates

  • Excellent written communication, especially for outreach messaging

  • Curiosity, persistence, and a relationship-building mindset

  • Highly self-motivated and comfortable working independently

  • Passionate about social impact, nonprofit work, or independent journalism

What You’ll Gain
  • Real-world experience with creative recruiting and sourcing

  • Mentorship and exposure to how full-cycle talent acquisition works

  • Opportunities to collaborate across multiple departments

  • A flexible, remote schedule and meaningful volunteer experience

Commitment

We ask for a commitment of 5-7 hours per week and a minimum of 6 months. This includes outreach time, team syncs, and follow-up communications.

How to Apply

Please send:

  • Your resume

  • A short, customized cover letter explaining what draws you to this role

To confirm that you’ve read this description, include the phrase "Committed to the Mission" and the result of 12 รท 3 somewhere in your letter.

If there’s no place to attach a cover letter, please email it to hr@whowhatwhy.org. Check your spam folder for responses - they sometimes land there.

Reminder

We value authenticity. Please make sure your application reflects your own voice and intent - we’re looking for connection, not just credentials.

Join Us

Help us find the people who make the mission happen - one outreach message, connection, and candidate at a time.

Location:

PO BOX 1103, NEW YORK, NY 10276, US

Mission Statement

WhoWhatWhy is a nonprofit, nonpartisan news organization aiming to discover and share the truth about matters affecting us all. We launched with the idea that the public deserves courageous and thorough investigations into powerful institutions, entities and individuals that shape our world. We pride ourselves on having no sacred cows, and covering stories that no one else will touch. At WhoWhatWhy, we believe that quality information changes minds--and that when you change minds, you change everything.

Description

WhoWhatWhy embodies a form of investigative reporting that is rigorous, relentless, and scientific - we call it forensic journalism.

We take on controversial topics others will not touch and dig deep to uncover and name the institutions and persons shaping our world. Our organization is neither partisan nor ideological and only provides accounts based on extensive research and thorough sourcing.

In addition to producing rigorous investigative reporting, we seek to further the long-term survival and betterment of the news industry as a whole.
