Mi Escuelita has a long, rich history in Chapel Hill. We began in 1995 as a childcare center for the Spanish-speaking community, where parents could feel comfortable relating to Spanish-speaking staff and where Latinx children could receive reinforcement in the language used in their homes. Mi Escuelita incorporated as a 501(c) (3) non-profit corporation in 1999, and enacted by-laws reflective of its proud history. We continue with our commitment in serving Latinx children and their families, as well as encouraging English-speaking families to enroll their preschoolers so they can learn Spanish language and Latin American culture at an early age. We currently provide year-round childcare to about 45 children between the ages of 1-5. We also proudly employ about a dozen native Spanish speaking employees.

We are currently looking for someone from the community to join our volunteer Board of Directors! The Board of Directors is essential to the continued success of Mi Escuelita, as it's the governing body that updates policies for the school as needed, sets the annual budget, and provides the administration with support and oversight.

Serving on the board would offer a volunteer the opportunity to practice and develop leadership skills, gain direct exposure to early childhood educational planning, and engage in meaningful community service. While historically, most of our board members have been parents of children currently enrolled in the preschool, we have found it invaluable to have community members with diverse perspectives-including those without direct children enrolled in the preschool (our bylaws actually have explicit language around striving for such members to be included in the board of directors). This experience could be particularly meaningful for volunteers with a dedicated interst in early childhood education, Spanish language education, nonprofits, and/or public interest.

Our Board meets 9-12 times a year (typically via Zoom) for 1.5-2 hours per meeting. Board members may also serve on a committee and/or volunteer to be an officer (our Secretary just completed his term, leaving that role open).
