Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: USDA Forest Service

The volunteer campground host position is often very dynamic. Duties include but are not limited to: greeting visitors, providing information, offering assistance, explaining rules and regulations, promoting responsible camping, gaining visitors cooperation in keeping areas clean and free of resource damage, helping us to keep the grounds, performing maintenance, picking up litter, raking sites, cleaning fir pits, cleaning and restocking restrooms, posting reservation, helping to collect visitor use statistics, monitoring and maintaining registration boxes and sign boards, and assisting with gaining compliance. The duties of this volunteer position are often performed outdoors in all kinds of weather. Terrain may be uneven, covered with vegetation, rocky and slick. Poisonous plants, animals or insects may be encountered. The position requires volunteers to use various hand tools such as rake, shovel, Pulaski, hand shears, hand saws, etc. Some power tool use may also be required at some sites (leaf blower, gas powered trimmer, power sander, etc.) as well as possible operation of a golf cart. Some paint work may also be required. Any duties requiring specialized equipment such as chainsaw, splitter, or ATV will require prior agency certification.

Campground Hosts are expected to be available from mid-May to mid-October, seven days a week. Breaks may be considered with prior approval. Season is subject to weather and occupancy. Hosts may be let go as early as Labor Day or as late as Columbus Day. Hosts are requested to be available for public interaction much of the day and expected to make full campground rounds early in the morning and evening. Hosts are not expected to contact visitors after daylight hours or to participate in law enforcement activities.

Local Recreation Staff will provide full training and support in duties. Hosts perform daily responsibilities independently without direct supervision. Forest Recreation employees will make near daily contact to provide support, perform heavy maintenance and regulatory compliance. On the Tahoe National Forest, you will be working individually in your designated campground, but also as part of a larger Forest-wide campground host program with up to 35 other volunteer hosts. Specific campsite conditions vary greatly from low elevation riverside campgrounds to higher elevation, mountain, and lakeside settings. The majority of Host's sites have minimal services. Some may have electricity, some may have water, and some have waste holding tanks.

The eastern side of the Tahoe National Forest is recruiting 1 volunteer host position for the 2025 summer camping season. Specific campground settings can be viewed via Recreation.gov

In addition to reimbursement, volunteer campground hosts will be provided a complimentary campsite for the season, identifying uniform components, and personal protective equipment for assigned duties. Certain sites may be provided a government golf cart or utility vehicle to perform official duties. Volunteer hosts who complete a full season in good standing will receive an Interagency Volunteer Pass, valid 12 months from the date of issue.
