Green Hill Therapy is expanding our volunteer opportunities and looking for passionate individuals to assist in hippotherapy sessions Monday-Thursday between 8am-4:30pm. These sessions are focused on promoting growth through play and the healing presence of our therapy horses. Under the direction of our skilled therapists, these volunteers will directly impact the social, emotional, and physical healing of countless children, aged 0-18, in our community. For both positions the ability to listen, and implement instruction is paramount as it ensures the safety of our patients and staff. A detailed safety and instructional session will be held prior to the volunteer's first session with patients and therapists. Those interested in, but new to equine interactions will also receive equine handling and safety training prior to their first session. Background checks will also be necessary. There are currently 2 available positions: Equine Leader and Side Walker. Volunteers are encouraged to learn and participate in both positions, as desired. For the Equine Leader role, primary focus in hippotherapy sessions will be the horse participant. Under the direct supervision and leadership of our OTs and PTs, the equine leader is responsible for tacking and leading the horses for 30 minute sessions while abiding by all direct instruction and modifications put forth in the session. These participants must be 16 years, or older, equine experience a plus but not required. The role of Side Walker will primarily be focused on assisting our therapists with therapy tasks, and adhering to all needs and instructions set forth by the therapist. Strong listening and reaction skills a plus in this role. No experience required. Any and all individuals meeting the above requirements are encouraged to apply! If you are looking for a rewarding and positive way to give back to the community while fostering healing, growth, and incredible transformation, we would love to meet you!

Mission Statement
Green Hill Therapy is dedicated to helping children reach their full potential. Our children come to play and they leave with the abilities and confidence to do so much more. We use hippotherapy and aquatherapy to enhance our outpatient occupational, physical and speech therapy services. Our licensed therapists use equine movement in addition to other therapy tools to address each child’s unique sensory, physical, cognitive and behavioral needs.
Description
Green Hill Therapy was founded in Louisville, Kentucky, by Shirley M. Cochran, M.S.P.T., P.C.S., pediatric physical therapist. Shirley was a lifelong horsewoman and professional rider for more than 15 years. She was first exposed to hippotherapy in graduate school, learning how beneficial the gait and movement of a horse are to an impaired person’s neuromuscular system.
Her experiences led to an intense passion for combining the healing power of the horse with classic therapeutic principles. In the spring of 2000, Shirley began Green Hill Therapy in her backyard (located on Green Hill’s current property) with three patients and a pony named Daisy, and she witnessed amazing results. Green Hill has grown exponentially over the past 17 years and now provides thousands of life-changing therapy sessions to children with the help of 80+ dedicated volunteers each year.
Corporations, charitable organizations, foundations, and individuals contribute funds annually to help bridge the gap between insurance reimbursements and actual operating expenses. Green Hill Therapy has a dedicated board of directors, staff, and volunteer team committed to the longevity of the organization. The body of evidence supporting the clinical benefits of aquatherapy and hippotherapy continues to grow, as does the number of children who benefit from Green Hill Therapy’s unique services.
