Major Duties of Position
The main role of a Visitor Services and Events Assistant (VSEA) is to facilitate the visitor experience at Faneuil Hall, Black Heritage trail, and Freedom trail sites. This includes providing a receptive atmosphere, orientation, and informal interpretation of park sites to visitors on a one-to-one or group basis that will increase visitor’s knowledge of the park's significance and relevance. This also includes assisting with event set-up, takedown and facilitation. The VSEA will also play an important role in staffing the front desk area at Faneuil Hall, ensuring a positive environment for visitors.
Service will consist of assisting rangers at Faneuil Hall and on the Trails to Freedom (Freedom Trial and Black Heritage Trail) on specific days and shifts. Specific duties include answering questions from the public and providing verbal and printed information as needed; providing visitors with clear instructions on how to plan their trip to Boston; informing visitors about programs and events; facilitating programs and events and giving general park orientation. Additional support tasks may include providing formal and informal interpretation of the historical resources.
About The Park
The National Parks of Boston (NPB) is the organizational framework for managing and supporting the collection of National Park sites in Boston: Boston National Historical Park (BOST), Boston African American National Historic Site (BOAF), and Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park (BOHA).
Faneuil Hall is a historic meeting place and market, built in 1742, with ties to the American Revolution, abolitionist movement, and other American social movements. The purpose of our visitor center is to greet and provide information about the park, park programs, information about the local area, and Freedom Trail sites.
Originally conceptualized in the 1950s, the Freedom Trail is an iconic symbol of Boston. Its red brick line snakes through some of the oldest parts of the City, navigating visitors to some of the most significant historic sites in the Downtown, North End, and Charlestown neighborhoods of Boston. The trail itself does not necessarily tell a narrative. Rather, it aids tourists with a starting point--an opening sampler of Boston's storied, complicated, and multi-faceted history. While many sites are primarily recognized for their role in the American Revolution, all the sites on the Freedom Trail remained significant because of the role they played in subsequent social, political, and religious movements, controversies, and challenges.
The Black Heritage Trail showcases residences and community buildings associated with a Black community that thrived on, and near, the north slope of Beacon Hill before, during, and after the American Civil War. Throughout that time, this community struggled and organized for equal rights and access to equal education. Community members championed the movement to abolish slavery and even housed freedom seekers on their journey along the Underground Railroad.
