As a BARK Ambassador, volunteers and their dogs will walk the trails as well as assist in setting up a Pop-Up Program to educate pet owners on the rules of BARK, leave no trace principles and generally how to be a responsible pet owner in the national parks. Volunteers and their pet will receive training in the resource, Leave No Trace and Delaware Water Gap pet policy. Once trained, volunteers will act as ambassadors to the park and speak with pet owners at popular locations such as the Cliff Park Trails, Kittatinny Point VC and the McDade Trail. Volunteers will help visitors and their pets to become BARK Rangers by signing an agreement (on the back of the BARK ranger brochure). Volunteers will be identified by wearing park issued uniform items.
Requirements of Pet Volunteers:
• Generally well-tempered and well behaved; can do simple commands like 'Sit", 'Stay’
• Comfortable interacting with people of all ages
• Comfortable encountering other dogs while on leash
• Comfortable being in a crowded area
Volunteer will be expected to work both indoors and outdoors. Additionally, safety considerations such as proper hydration, heat-related illnesses, hypothermia, insect/animal bites and stings, and tick-borne illnesses should be discussed as appropriate given the local work environment, season, and geographic location. Types of weather may include hot, humid, wet, windy, and cold. Work may occur across uneven terrain, including hills, slopes, grades, and wetlands, in both forested and open areas. Exposure to long periods of sunlight, precipitation, wind, dust, dirt, insects, irritating or poisonous plants may be present.
