Please visit the new page to apply.
The seasonal volunteer(s) will serve as campground hosts for the Windy Saddle Complex, which includes 4 small primitive recreation sites: Seven Devils Campground, Windy Saddle Trailhead, Windy Saddle Horse Facilities, and Heaven’s Gate Trailhead, located in Hells Canyon National Recreation Area. There is also a Forest Service Guard Station, the Seven Devils Guard Station that consists of a log bunk house, cook house, and barn/corral. There are outstanding views of Hells Canyon, Oregon, Washington, and a small part of Montana from this area. Most of the facilities are above 7,200’ in elevation.
Hosts are welcoming, outdoor oriented, self-reliant individuals who are eager to share knowledge and passion for wilderness, hiking, sightseeing, and camping. Hosts will also assist with the upkeep of the campgrounds, other facilities maintenance, and provide public contact.
The Seven Devils Mountains and the Windy Saddle Complex is located 18 miles west of the town of Riggins, Idaho at the end of Forest Road 517. Windy Saddle Complex includes:
- Seven Devils Campground which has 9 sites, 2 single vault toilets, bulletin board and fee station, and a short 100-yard trail into Seven Devils Lake. The campground is rustic and is not adequate for RV’s or trailers.
- Windy Saddle Trailhead has 4 campsites, 1 double vault toilet, information boards and fee station, and serves as the main trailhead parking for Hells Canyon Wilderness and the Seven Devils Mountains.
- Windy Saddle Horse Facilities is located a short distance away, and has 4 sites, hitch rails, and a single vault toilet. It has extra-long parking sites designed for horse and other stock trailers.
- Heaven’s Gate Trailhead is a large parking area for a short trail up to Heaven’s Gate Lookout, a very popular attraction that draws thousands of visitors each year. The Trailhead has informational boards and a single vault toilet.
The Seven Devils Guard station may be available to house the hosts, although some minor repairs will be required. The guard station has an on-demand gas hot water heater, gas refrigerator, huge 5 burner cast iron cookstove, propane lights, and a small woodstove. The bunkhouse has 4 bunks, some cabinets and dressers, and propane lights. There is adequate room for a small RV or camp trailer, although there is no gray water services or electricity. There is an outhouse located near the facility. There is cell phone coverage; some services work better than others. There is no WiFi available at the site. A small camp trailer may be available for use. A 4-wheeler with a pressure water tank is available to assist in the cleaning of the vault toilets.
