Blue Hill Observatory & Science Center is dedicated to fostering public understanding of Earth’s weather, climate, and environmental systems. Located atop Great Blue Hill just south of Boston, the Observatory was founded in 1885 and maintains the most extensive and consistent climate record in North America. The Observatory's mission is to advance climate research and understanding through Earth system science research, education, and outreach.

About the Role

Blue Hill Observatory is seeking a passionate and knowledgeable Volunteer Tour Guide to support our newly redesigned Observatory tours and programs. In this role, Tour Guides will engage the public during their visit to the Observatory, teaching them about the longstanding history of the Observatory, meteorology and its importance in preserving a thorough climate record. Volunteers in this role will be trained on the various tours and history of the Observatory.

This volunteer opportunity offers flexible hours ranging from 3 to 12 hours per week, depending on your schedule and our seasonal needs. The Director of Operations will work closely with volunteers to create a schedule that is mutually beneficial. While there are opportunities for Volunteer Tour Guides to support on weekdays, our opportunities and biggest need is weekends 10am - 4pm (anywhere from 3-6 hours).

Responsibilities Often Include

  • Lead small guided tours throughout our small museum and rooftop
  • Support the gift shop by checking guests in for tours and selling merchandise
  • Restock and straighten gift shop as needed

Consider volunteering if...

  • You have a background in meteorology, weather observation, atmospheric science, education or a related field
  • You like engaging with and meeting new people and teaching them new things
  • You are eager to connect the public to this historic site and its role in maintaining uninterrupted data collection.
  • You are comfortable walking on uneven terrain (i.e. stairs and rocks) and in various weather conditions

Other Requirements

  • Volunteers must successfully complete a CORI/SORI Background Check
  • Must be able to climb 3 flights of stairs regularly
  • Availability for one volunteer training (March 8, March 23 or individually scheduled)
  • Applications are due March 1 at 5pm
